Yum, yum: Best French Fries in Toronto

When it comes to fries, all diets are off. Dip them in ketchup or eat ‘em plain, but we aren’t talking Happy Meals. For sweet, gourmet or simple frenchies, check out these eateries, and let the fry frenzy begin.

The Rushton
This French-inspired bistro nestled in the St. Clair West ‘hood has something for everyone. After 13 years of ownership at Ferro restaurant, Francesco Pronesti decided to open something a little different, with a quaint vibe.

While no meal at The Rushton can start off wrong with their French onion soup, no dinner is complete without the restaurant’s famous sweet potato fries with garlic aioli. A mix of sweet and salty with a garlic kick, these fries will have you coming back again and again.

ONE Restaurant
Located in the heart of Yorkville, ONE Restaurant is the place for top celeb spotting during TIFF, and just steps away from Hazelton Lanes (read: good shopping). After achieving culinary success with North 44 and Bymark, Toronto chef Mark McEwan brought his culinary talents to ONE Restaurant at The Hazelton Hotel.

Serving French- and Italian-inspired fare, the restaurant offers diners some truly fine fries in a glam setting. Order crisp frites with citrus garlic aioli or truffle and reggiano. No ketchup needed here!

Burger Shack
At Eglinton and Avenue, this casual burger joint has all the classics diners could want. Burger Shack is the place for wholesome burgers and creamy milkshakes in chocolate or vanilla. The thick cut and crispy fries are so good, they’re well worth the extra carbs and added treadmill time. Open late, these fries make the perfect after bar snack. Can you say supersize me?

Harbord Fish and Chips
This U of T fixture keeps it simple and does it right. Even the strictest of dieters can’t say no to the tempting smell of freshly cut fries, crispy fried fish, malt vinegar and a squeeze of lemon from this little shop, all wrapped in newsprint. Their handcut fries are simple, hot and just the right amount of salty. On a warm summer day, a lunchtime stop here will take you right to the ocean.

  1. Great picks! The fries at The Rushton are to die for. I haven't made a pilgrimage in awhile, but I may have to now! Burger Shack is a high school favourite – the vibe is very retro and the banquet burgers + fries are amazing.
