Fashion-able: Fresh spring kicks

With last week’s blast of warm weather, we gleefully ran to our closets and started to pull out our spring staples: shorts, skirts, dresses…Since technically it is spring, it got us thinking about what shoes we’ll need this season. Here, we’ve rounded up some of our classic favourites and new kicks we’re coveting for this season.

And hey, you can never really have enough shoes, right?

If you’re looking for some investment pieces, these Gucci Tri-color suede platform sandals with a splash of mint (we adore mint) are great for spring, and can be transitioned into colder weather with some opaque black tights.

An alternative to leopard, these Haircalf Giraffe Slipper by Charles Philip offer “cushioned leather insole, an indented toe flap and rubber soles. They arrive packaged in a beautiful box, encased in a shoe bag and scented with tiny sachets – how precious!” Precious, indeed

Love Jeffrey Campbell but want a break from the ubiquitous Lita? This spring try out something new – there are a myriad of interesting styles including this gem, the Rockette Wedge.

Hooked on flats? This Aztec flat available at Dealuxe from Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent is an office-appropriate boost of colour that makes us happy to just look at it.

We’re pretty sure you can wear these Alexander Wang Chloe perch-trimmed leather sandals (bit of a mouthful) just about anywhere. The neutral colours with a pop of “perch” (a pretty peachy-coral) would look great with some black skinny jeans and a white tee.

We can’t write this post without mentioning a favourite on the fourth floor – a nice crisp pair of white Converse Chuck Taylor All Star’s. We’re personally fans of the low cut, but the high tops are fun too. Classic, comfortable, stylish and great for riding a bike or wearing with jeans or shorts.

ALDO’s Calcagni wedges – if we can wear these many hours a day without (too much) pain – you know they’re a good thing. This season they come in a variety of colours from neutrals to neons and can add a little cheap and cheerful punch to any ensemble. Highlighter yellow? Why not?

ShoeMint always offers amazing styles with their collections, and when fashion icon Rachel Bilson and visionary celeb stylist Nicole Chavez are designing, we can’t help but shop.
We’re so excited about the warm weather and the shoe options to come. Now only to decide on pedi colours…

Fashion-able: Spring trending topics

Even though it doesn’t really feel like winter has even truly arrived, believe it or not, spring styles are just around the corner. We’re likely facing a few more weeks of cold fronts, but we’re starting to plan our escapes from this chilly climate in favour of warmer weather. Here’s a roundup of our fave spring 2012 trends (beyond the cats on cats on cats trend), seen on the runways in Toronto and around the world.

Pastel

We still love a good pop of neon (we were raised in the 80s, after all) but this season we’re making some room in our closets for pastels. Taking a cue from the Easter bunny, lighter shades were prevalent on the runways in various shows including 3.1 Phillip Lim, Acne and Louis Vuitton.

Louis Vuitton

Digital prints

This season we love a good, bold, digital print seen head to toe (think more-is-more). Although we were initially overwhelmed by the idea of so much pattern, we have to admit we’re now in love with the look. If you’re wary, stick to patterns with muted colors and more subtle designs, such as this look from Erdem from London Fashion Week.

Sporty/Athletic Chic

Break out the neoprene, spandex and racer-backs. Designers showed their athletic sides on their spring/summer 2012 runways. In time for the London 2012 Olympic Games, tracksuits are reinvented at shows like Alexander Wang, and can once again be worn out of the house (let’s all forget that this was OK for a hot second back in the early 2000s when Paris Hilton convinced us Juicy Couture track suits could be worn out of the house. This is not the same thing).

Alexander Wang

Peplum

Seen on the runways of Jason Wu and YSL, minis, blouses and second-skin dresses were seen sporting a bit of a protrusion, known as the peplum. Originating in ancient Greece and prevalent in the 80s the peplum is great to add a bit of drama to any outfit.

The midsection

You have three months to do your crunches, so get cracking. This spring/summer get ready so show off your midsection. Whether your stomach is completely exposed, or through panelling, bellybuttons are taking center stage next season.

We’ve got our wish list ready. Do you?

Fashion-able: Friendship bracelets

Best friends are there for the break-ups, make-ups and to share clothes. Yes, even the Alexander Wang clothes you’d rather not share with anyone. So how do you celebrate years of such fun, loyalty and fights over cute boys?
A throwback to your grade four days, friendship bracelets are back in a big way. The latest in wrist wear is colourful, trendy and completely age appropriate, regardless of how old you are. If you are ready to tie up with your BFF, take a look at these fine string options.
Made by sisters Danielle and Jodie Snyder, DANNIJO jewelry is hand-made in classic yet bohemian style with a rocker edge. Their bold and sparkly pieces are the current jewels of choice for fashion “it” girls everywhere. For the “it” girls in your life, DANNIJO has a four pack of friendship bracelets in this season’s brightest hues.

String-chic and finished off with a signature DANNIJO logo, the bracelets are easily tied and adjustable. At $48 for all four, DANNIJO makes friendship fashionable.

If string is not your thing, than Rebecca Minkoff might be more up your alley. Say “best friends” in python with the Cassidy bracelet ($75). This double wrap triangle studded bracelet is made with genuine leather and an adjustable buckle closure. Since animal print really is the new black, you’ll surely be the coolest best friends in town wearing these bracelets

Feeling crafty? Go for DIY friendship bracelets, because family members aren’t the only ones who appreciate those homemade gifts. Get stringing with 22 colours of floss, metallic beads, four colour-coded looms, a beading needle and easy to use instructions.

Packaged in a little suitcase, the Friends Forever Friendship Bracelet Kit ($29) takes friendship on the road. Sold at Chapters, these are true friendship bracelets made with a whole lot of heart. Seriously, it’s time consuming.

Fashion-able: Your bag goes on your back for fall 2010

OK, so we have to eat our recent words about how much cooler messenger bags are than knapsacks. Immediately after posting, we started to notice that backpacks were hot for this fall. Some amazing designers have taken the old school standby and made it cool for those of us that have made the transition to working girl (or guy). They did a good job. Sigh.

We hate when we’re wrong.

Here are some of the coolest bags from the fall 2010 collections:

Alexander Wang

The darling of the fashion world has created a very chic felt, velvet and wool backpack collection. We love that these three are unisex, cozy and luxe enough to differentiate us from the students.
Sydney bags in grey felt, black velvet and grey and black striped wool. Price upon request.

Louis Vuitton
Another man-friendly option is the classic LV pack. You know it’s high quality. It’s gonna wear well. The warm browns are spot-on for fall. ‘Nuff said.

Louis Vuitton Bosphore bag. $1,410
Tory Burch
The lovely Tory Burch has updated the childhood nylon sack to a sleek adult version, complete with funky gold hardware and striped straps.
Palma Small backpack, $295
Free People
Sometimes, Free People errs a little on the hippie side with lots of unusual prints and flowery embroidery. But this gorgeous backpack blurs the line between country and urban. The rich-looking leather is a great burnt sienna, which we just love. There are some clever little details, like the key hanging from the strap to the right. Drool.

Free People leather and canvas backpack, $298.54
All these hot backpacks are making us nostalgic for the days of fresh new notebooks, squeaky white gym shoes and schoolgirl crushes. We’ll have to make do with slinging one on our backs and bringing a bagged lunch to the office.
