Fashion-able: White Crow Online

As if working on Queen Street didn’t present enough shopping temptations, White Crow Online has opened up shop in the Burroughes Building.

White Crow has been one of our favourite online shopping destinations since it launched last December, so we were ecstatic to see them move into our building. This is White Crow’s first semi-permanent store front. Previously, they had a Valentine’s Day pop-up shop at Sleeping Giant Gallery and teamed up with LAB Consignment for a Mother’s Day sale at the Drake Hotel.

Owner Jin has a friend who helps her source styles and they import their clothing from Korea. Jin says she’d love to expand the store and offer wares from Australian and Europe, as well. White Crow’s offerings feel very fresh and of-the-moment. Best of all, the price points are really reasonable (most pieces are under $50), which makes lunchtime shopping sprees a legitimate concern.

Here are the pieces that top our shopping list this summer:

Jin says the plan was to stay in the Burroughes only for the summer, but the response has been really positive, so she may stay longer. Fine by us, we loving having White Crow here.

Check them out online or at 639 Queen St W. on street level.

A visit from… Jessica Jensen

When news reached our office that our new neighbour was none other than handbag designer Jessica Jensen, well, we were overjoyed. Why? A few reasons:

1. Creative folk seem to flock to our home (The Burroughes Building) and we simply love the energy that comes along with them.

2. She is absolutely delightful, genuine, humble, sweet and passionate about what she does. She even brought us heart-shaped cookies upon visiting!

3. There are handbags for sale on the fourth floor. ‘Nuff said.

Here’s what we learned from our visit with JJ:

There are some designer collaborations coming down the pipeline:

  • New York-based designer Alexander Berardi and Jensen are teaming up once again to come out with some new designs (they did LGFW spring 2010 together last year).
  • Arthur Mendonça for Jessica Jensen. “Arthur is wonderful, because he catapults me in directions that I wouldn’t have otherwise gone. It’s always fun to work with another designer for that reason; different creative philosophies and directions lead us to be pushed in new directions. It’s awesome.” Cheers to that.
  • Another venture Jensen has taken on is designing for the International Film Fashion Festival (IFFF). Four designers have been asked to pair up with a local filmmaker and design a handbag that goes hand in hand with their short film.

On the horizon, expect to see more evening clutches that work for day or night, and a move to metallic leathers, textures and iPad cases and sleeves. With tanneries in Italy, and suppliers in NYC, Japan, Hong Kong and China, life is busy for this lady.

The door to Jensen’s groovy office.

And we all love a good piece of gossip – rumour has it that Jensen may soon be running a Canadian company’s handbag division, designing collections for this unnamed company alongside her own brand.

Readers, keep your ears to the ground and your eyes peeled.

My ‘Hood: Lisa

Lisa and Michelle live in the same Parkdale apartment building, so rather than double up on the West Queen West ‘Hood, Lisa wrote about our office ‘hood: Queen and Bathurst.

Our ‘hood in 1928. It was cool even then.

Besides sharing The Burroughes Building with cool peeps like Jessica Jensen and Philip Sparks, we love our work ‘hood for its interesting characters, yummy lunch eats, shopping and endless supply of coffee.

Jessica Jensen and Philip Sparks keep it fashionable at The Burroughes.

We’re not kidding about the coffee – there are three shops at the Q & B intersection. Tim Hortons and Starbucks are staples, and Lit Espresso makes an amazing Americano and tasty savoury scone (find them on the first floor of Design Republic, which also lives in The Burroughes).

After we caffeinate, we like to shop at American Apparel, H&M, Heel Boy and Mac Cosmetics, which are all just a short walk down the street. We also love popping in and out of the antique stores that line this section of Queen for cool, vintage décor.

When we’re not busy shopping (or working), we eat. We love Smoke’s Poutinerie (they once surprised us with free poutine to the office!), and Reggie’s Sandwiches for something a little lighter.

 Mmm…poutine. Image source.

Sometimes, we head to Shanghai Cowgirl for all-day brekkie (okay, maybe that’s just me) or after-work beers. And for dessert, TeamBuy.ca intro’d us to Blushberry, AKA frozen yogurt heaven. (Plus, they have the super cool Mberry tablets. Try them).

Convenience and curiosity come in the form of Shoppers Drug Mart and Drake General Store (Bathurst), respectively. We love the former because it carries everything you could ever possibly need, while the latter carries everything you will never need, but won’t be able to resist just the same (plus, it’s a go-to when we really need a creative gift).

Do you need a Curiosities Kit? No. But it’s still sweet.

Come check out our ‘hood. And while you’re here, pop in and say hello.
