Rave: Holiday Cosmetics Guide

The holiday season is upon us, which we on the fourth floor take as an opportunity to sparkle shamelessly. Not that we really need any help with that but these festive holiday cosmetics certainly don’t hurt. Here are a few of the beauty goodies we definitely wouldn’t return come Boxing Day!

MAC Cosmetics – Guilty Passions Collection

We don’t feel guilty about loving these muted holiday colours.

These mini kits for lips and eyes are a must-have for the Yuletide season. The warm, versatile shades are great for daytime and can transition easily for an evening of holiday cheer. Plus, how could we not be tempted by these these adorable little boxes? They would make a great gift (not that we’d blame you if you kept them for yourself.)

OPI James Bond Collection

“Do you like wild things, Mr. Bond?”

This season you can have all the drama and colour of James Bond literally at your fingertips. Channel your inner bond girl with any of the 12 shades (all named after Bond movies!) and top it all off with the 18-karat gold-flecked top coat that comes in a shiny gold bottle, called The Man With the Golden Gun.

Urban Decay Holiday 2012

The Dangerous Palette

If you feel like going a little bolder with your eye colour, Urban Decay’s holiday collection offers a smack of colour that will make you stand out at all your festive parties. You can try pairing any of their seasonal palettes with their colourful Ocho Loco 24/7 Glide On eye pencils for a look that will have you in high demand under the mistletoe.

Chanel Eclats du Soir

If ever in doubt, Chanel is ALWAYS an appropriate gift! Just as pretty in the signature black packaging as it is when applied, a nail polish or lipstick from their limited edition holiday collection definitely beats a tired old Starbucks gift card. The new nailpolish, Malice, is a standout piece.

Laura Mercier Art Deco Muse

Just looking at the shiny reds, shimmering bronzes and glimmering golds of the Laura Mercier Art Deco Muse collection puts us in a festive mood. The holidays call for tradition; we suggest a classic red lip, dark eyeliner and shimmery lid as a toast to the season.

These are just a few of the many pieces that would have us smiling were we to receive them (hint, hint!). We’ve been very good this year…

Fashion-able: Spring beauty collections we can’t wait for

Being the beauty junkies that we are, it’s rare that a new nail polish or lip shade escapes a morning debrief on the fourth floor. Since Wiarton Willie just predicted an early spring, we’re looking forward to electric neons, over-the-top lashes, modern cat eyes, a golden glow, statement lips, power brows, metallic accents and these looks and collections:

Rosy Glow

We’re loving the look of pretty feminine cheeks seen on the runways at Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs – rosy cheeks that were just the right mix of flirty and flushed. A piece from Bobbi Brown’s Rose Gold collection, particularly a beautiful shimmer brick compact in Rose Gold or Wild Rose ($49), is the perfect addition to our spring makeup bag to achieve this look.

A pretty and delicate look for Spring from Bobbi Brown.

Garden Pastels

We don’t know if Lancôme and Dior are conspiring to host the ultimate garden party this year, but add us to the guest list. Dior’s Spring 2012 collection is inspired by a rose garden planted and lovingly cultivated by Mr. Dior himself. We’re swooning over the limited edition Dior Garden Clutch ($75) and new eyeshadow palettes with soft greens, delicate violets and subtle pinks.

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and Dior is always appropriate. Hint, hint!

Similarly, Lancôme invites us to a Roseraie des Delices this spring – a rose garden of delights. We’ll wait to see who is bold enough to rock the new Color Fever Gloss in Green Petal ($31). We bet we’ll spot it on a few fashionable pairs of lips at World MasterCard Fashion Week Toronto.

Pistachio? Mint-chip green? Either way, this pale green is lovely for spring.

Coloured Liner

If a minty-green pout is a little too much, we like some bold colour around the eyes. Estée Lauder’s 2012 collection, with the Kajal Eye Crayon in Dramatic Teal ($23), presents a strong colourful look for spring. It’s especially pretty when it’s drawn all the way into the inner corners of the eyes – talk about eye popping.

MAC is one of the masters of bright and vibrant colour, and we can always count on them to bring something intense to each new collection. These Pearlglide Intense Eye Liners ($18) from the Vera collection lead us to believe they’re also down with the fully lined colour trend.

Nail trends be damned, all we can think about is the upcoming polish collection from China Glaze in honour of the Hunger Games which premieres Friday, March 23 (countdown is on!). While the timing doesn’t feel quite right for some of the dark shades, soft and pretty doesn’t exactly suit the nation of Panem. We’ll give the final verdict when we see it in stores, but we’re pretty pumped about some of the richer, Katniss-inspired shades.

New polishes inspired by each of the districts.

Rave: Deep, dark nail polish

As you may remember from our earlier post on nail art, we love experimenting with different nail colours and designs, especially in the summer. Those bright, funky colours, intricate designs, patterns – we can’t resist.

But sometimes you need a break from all the neon brights, and crave something a little more glam, vamp and chic. We started to wonder if we could find shades that will transition us from summer to autumn.

With all the variety we found below, we’re happy to report it’s an absolute possibility. If you see us out and about, you’ll definitely see us rocking one of these bold colours on our fingers and toes.

If you’re a bit nervous about expressing your dark side, ease your way in with this pretty, electric blue (Aruba Blue) from Essie. You can get it at Shopper’s Drug Mart for around $12, making it an easy dabble in the dark arts. Geri Halliwell was seen with a similar colour earlier this summer while in Monaco.

We liked the idea of a deep, purplish-blue, so we tried out O.P.I’s Light My Sapphire. It retails for about $10 at Trade Secrets. For all of you who want to emulate Kristen Stewart’s rocker-chic glam, this is the colour for you.

We’re also loving burgundy for a dark summer colour. M.A.C.’s Vintage Vamp Nail Lacquer is sleek, sultry and Kim Kardashian-esque for events or a night out with family and friends. C’mon, you know you wanna look like Kim just a little bit, sometimes.

On a hot summer Saturday night, there’s no doubt that some of us will be as bold as Emma Roberts and go for pure, rich black. China Glaze is an office favourite, and we especially like China Glaze’s Liquid Leather, which can be found at select Trade Secrets for less than $10.

So there you have it. You don’t need to stick with bubble gum pink just because it’s August. Try one of these hot, deep shades now, all the way into autumn.

What’s in Your… Makeup Bag

Today we introduce a new post called ‘What’s In Your…?’  We may feature our car, medicine cabinet, desk drawer, closet, kitchen cupboard or any other place that we keep stuff we think you might find interesting.

We start with ‘What’s In Your…Makeup Bag’.
On the Fourth Floor, we all have our personal favourites for what makes our hair shiny and our eyes sparkle.  We love Oscar Blandi’s Jasmine Oil Serum, Bobbi Brown’s Day to Night Warm Eye Palette and without OPI’s new Justin Bieber shades, our nails would not be the perfect shade of One Less Lonely Girl lavender.
Our makeup bags may be filled with makeup that we love, but these are the products we can’t live without.

Debra’s Pick: L’Oreal Collagen Extra Volume mascara
I received this mascara in a swag bag (see – seeding does work!) and I love it.  It doesn’t clump, gives me really full lashes and comes off easily at night.  I’ve been a big fan of Covergirl’s Lashblast (the orange tube) for the last year and this one is slowly taking over as my number one beauty item right now.
Great for lips and dry winter cuticles (and babies’ bums).

Hands down. It’s beautiful. My mom gave it to me for Christmas a few years ago, and I rarely use any other blush. It’s perfect for my fair skin, giving me a little glow like I’ve been outside, without actually looking like I’m wearing blush. I sometimes use it on my lips, and love that they have a specific lip version now too.
Apply with a small angle brush and you’ve got a long lasting liner that doesn’t smudge. I love this product because it lasts forever and it’s really easy to apply. Plus, with a few swipes it’s easy to take your day look into evening, as it goes on creamy but dries to an intense matte colour.

For a glow that’s just rosy, I stick with this cheek roll-on blush.

I love it for exactly the way they describe it: The fiberstretch formula and over-sized brush make every little lash bigger, fuller, longer -looking and more dramatic.
It’s true!!! Hands down, the best mascara I’ve used. Volume + length + no clumps or flakes = makeup love of my life.
Christina’s Pick: M.A.C Fluid Line
My favourite beauty product (just one! How do I choose just one?) is M.A.C.’s Fluid Line. I discovered this product in Grade 12, and have been using consistently since.

It’s the only eyeliner that doesn’t run, smudge, or end up in my tear ducts within five minutes. M.A.C.’s 210 precise eye liner brush is the perfect tool for applying clean, straight lines.
It’s my favourite item in my makeup bag because it works with my skin tone any time of year. It is a very light powder but offers really great coverage, so I get a smooth and flawless look – and anytime I need a quick refresh during the day, I can just “powder my nose”, as they say.
As you can see, we really are simple girls when it comes down to it. Give us a little blush, a dab of powder, some mascara and a lip balm, and that’s all we need to look our best and feel great.
